histogram

Major Topic Area: quality concepts

Histograms are a graphical tool utilized to understand the variability of a dataset. The vertical (y) axis of a histogram is always the number of occurrences. The horizontal (x) axis is a number of subdivisions representing the range of values of the dataset. For example, you may wish to create a histogram of the daily high temperatures in a location. The temperature dataset is summarized in the following table.

Number of occurrences (days) Temperature Range (ºC)
1 15.0-17.0
1 17.1-19.0
2 19.1-21.0
7 21.1-23.0
16 23.1-25.0
3 25.1-27.0
1 27.1-29.0

The corresponding histogram would have the following appearance:
