Histograms are a graphical tool utilized to understand the variability of a dataset. The vertical (y) axis of a histogram is always the number of occurrences. The horizontal (x) axis is a number of subdivisions representing the range of values of the dataset. For example, you may wish to create a histogram of the daily high temperatures in a location. The temperature dataset is summarized in the following table.
| Number of occurrences (days) | Temperature Range (ºC) |
| 1 | 15.0-17.0 |
| 1 | 17.1-19.0 |
| 2 | 19.1-21.0 |
| 7 | 21.1-23.0 |
| 16 | 23.1-25.0 |
| 3 | 25.1-27.0 |
| 1 | 27.1-29.0 |
