Muda

Muda is a Japanese term referring to the elimination of waste.

Waste can be defined as anything that is non-value adding. Therefore, Muda can also be thought of as a process to eliminate non-value adding activities.

The following table summarizes the 7 different waste categories.

Overproduction	excess inventory
Waiting	delays
Transportation	unneeded movement
Processing	Poor process design
Motion	activities that don't add value
Inventory	Inventory with no immediate use
