Drum, Buffer, Rope

Major Topic Area: Lean, TOC

Drum, buffer, rope (DBR) is a methodology used to manage the flow of goods in a manufacturing environment. The DRUM of DBR is the rate of production of the constraint or bottleneck operation. The ROPE of DBR is a communication between the drum and the gateway work center (the first operation in the product routing). The drum utilizes the rope to signal the need to replenish a controlled BUFFER of wip which is positioned in front of the drum.
